Vacation Work
Unfortunately this year I wasn't successful in gaining any vacation work, however the application process was a really good experience and I feel has set me up well for next year. I made it to the interview stage with Xstrata mining but due to needing time off for a family holiday this was unable to go any further. For any first years out there, I highly recommend applying for vacation work within the resources sector and start thinking about applications from June/July onwards. From what I have learnt, if you are successful with a mining company, you will more than likely relocated to the actual site for a 12 week block. More than likely your accommodation will be accounted for by the company and you will be working a roster shift replacing some of the workers who go home for Christmas. As a first year the main idea is to get you accustomed to the site. It would be an amazing experience and I am hoping to be successful with my applications next year.

First Year Finished
Last Saturday saw the end of my first year of uni and the start of an almost 4 month holiday. I have really liked uni and have found it more interesting then high school. Uni is a really different style of learning compared to high school in that it is very self managed learning. You essentially work at your own pace and over time you will find what works and what doesnt.

First Post
Hi everyone, my names Blake Scriven and for my first post I have thought I should start off by telling you all about myself. I am a Queensland Resources Council scholarship student ambassador and I am studying a Bachelor of Engineering as a Dean's Scholar at QUT. The first year of engineering for us was a general year, however since the beginning I have always known that ultimately I will major in civil engineering with a second major in structural engineering with plans to work within the resources sector.
Aside from my studies, I have been heavily involved with athletics and have had some really good experiences with the sport. To date, I have represented Queensland six times at a National level, have won three national gold medals, have broken two Australian Records and previously vice-captained the Queensland Athletics team.
When I can, I enjoy getting away from it all by going to the beach with some friends and relaxing there. To finish off, I would just like to say I believe with a good disciplined approach to time management, anything and everything can be achieved.
